How to clean your makeup brushes THE RIGHT WAY

Hello everyone!

Today I thought of sharing my methods of cleaning makeup brushes with you guys along with some awesome tips and tricks which will help your brushes last longer. I personally feel it’s very important to take out time and clean them every once in a while. It is time consuming and does take little efforts but it’s all worth it. Brushes accumulate a lot of germs and bacteria over a period of time. If you do not clean them regularly, you end up transferring it back on to your skin. You might even start wondering if it’s the new products that you’re trying out that is causing you breakouts but actually it might be the dirty brushes. We don’t want that to happen, do we? So let’s get started.

There are 2 methods of cleaning makeup brushes:

  1. Spot cleansing
  2. Deep conditioning

Let’s start with spot cleansing. What is spot cleansing? It is an easy and efficient way of cleaning your brushes on the spot. It takes less than 2 minutes and you’re done. For this method I use my MAC Brush Cleanser! I recently picked this one up. I don’t use makeup often and hence I’ve used up just a bit as you can tell from the image. I take a kitchen paper towel as it’s thick and pour the solution onto it and then gently swirl my brush over it. It takes off all the makeup right away within seconds and dries soon too.

Tips & Tricks:

  1. Swirl your brush in the same way as you would use it to apply onto your face (Hope that makes sense). In this way you won’t damage the bristles.
  2. After cleaning it always remember to reshape it back in it’s original shape before it dries.
  3. After it has dried completely I always spray some rubbing alcohol/ clinical spirit onto them so that they’re sanitized.

The second method is the deep conditioning method. This requires time and efforts but is a much cheaper alternative. I have seen many YouTubers use a mild baby shampoo to clean their makeup brushes and it works just fine. But along with cleaning them I also love to improve the longevity of my brushes (who doesn’t love that, right?) You can go ahead and use that method or you can give this one a try the next time you decide to clean your brushes. For this method you’ll require 1 portion of liquid hand wash (this will kill all the germs stuck onto your brushes and will also help in sanitizing them), 2 portions of any mild gentle shampoo and 1 portion of conditioner (this will help the bristles to remain soft). Mix all of these together and use it as a mixture to clean your makeup brushes. Firstly wet all your brushes one by one, then dip it in the mixture and swirl it on to your palm. Wash it thoroughly with water and voila you’re done! Now leave them to dry. It will take roughly around 3-4 hours to dry completely.

Tips & Tricks:

  1. Swirl your brush in the same way as you would use it to apply on to your face, just like in the spot cleansing method.
  2. After thoroughly washing it reshape it back to it’s original shape and then leave it to dry.
  3. Do not use hair dryer to dry your brushes.
  4. Do not dry them in a vertical position as it would cause the bristles to shed. Dry them as shown in the image (Learnt this technique from a fellow blogger and absolutely love it!)
  5. In order to get rid of stubborn residue like gel liner or lipstick pigments, dip the brush in any oil first (coconut or olive preferably) to break it down and then go ahead with the usual.

Do try these methods while cleaning your brushes next time. If you use foundation, concealer or any cream products on a regular basis make sure you clean them after every use if possible or at the most after 2 uses. Eye-shadow brushes or powder brushes can be cleaned once in a week.

  1. Very interesting. I used before a gentle face wash mixed with olive oil and it was great. Now I bought a special brush shampoo and I also have an instant brush cleaner if i need to do it faster. πŸ™‚

  2. I do love that Mac cleanser. I ran out, so I bought a drugstore brand, and the gunk doesn’t come off nearly as easily.

    1. It’s really difficult to get everything right off. I haven’t tried any drugstore brand yet, so I can’t really tell but MAC cleanser definitely does the job very well. You should consider repurchasing it once you run out of the drugstore one πŸ˜‰

great post and very detailed! I used to clean my brushes every 2 weeks using olive oil mixed with dish soap and it did the job quite well but I received a sample of a brush cleansing balm and I have been using that recently, i can’t tell which one works better but for future I will try out what you suggest above.
